Struck posthumously in Alexander's name at Magnesia ad Maeandrum, this drachm falls within the turbulent succession period following Alexander's death in 323 BC — the Wars of the Diadochi, during which his former generals carved up the empire while continuing to issue coinage under his name and authority to maintain legitimacy. Magnesia ad Maeandrum, situated in Ionia on the Maeander river, was one of several Asia Minor mints that kept producing Alexandrine coinage well into the early Antigonid period.
