After Alexander's death in 323 BC, Lysimachus controlled the mint at Kolophon and struck coinage in Alexander's name rather than his own — a deliberate political choice to maintain legitimacy during the wars of the Diadochi. This practice continued until roughly 301 BC, when his victory at Ipsus consolidated enough power that he began issuing coins bearing his own name and portrait. Price 1827 places this issue firmly within that transitional output, struck by a successor who had not yet declared himself king, which he did only in 306 BC.
