Kolophon, one of the most productive mints in the post-Alexander succession period, struck this issue during the chaotic years following Alexander's death in 323 BC, when his generals — the Diadochi — carved his empire into competing fiefdoms. Coins struck in Alexander's name continued for decades after his death, partly for political legitimacy and partly because the type was so widely trusted in trade that discontinuing it was commercially unthinkable. Price 1820 falls within the period when Lysimachos and Antigonos Monophthalmos were contesting control of western Asia Minor, making the administrative authority behind this specific issue genuinely ambiguous.
