Additional information

Chios continued striking silver in Alexander's name well after his death in 323 BC — a practice common among Aegean island mints that had no strong civic coinage tradition of their own and found the Alexander types commercially trusted across eastern Mediterranean trade networks. The island's position as a major wine exporter made reliable, recognizable silver essential for long-distance transactions.

De Luynes 1666 places this among the later posthumous issues, where local magistrate names or control marks distinguish the series by mint. The Chian examples are typically identified by specific symbol placement rather than explicit ethnic legend.
