Hormazd I ruled for less than a year — the precise dates are disputed, but most scholars place his reign somewhere between 270 and 273 AD, making this among the shortest reigns in Sasanian history. He succeeded Shapur I, architect of Rome's most humiliating defeat in centuries, and died before consolidating anything of his own. Coins attributable to him are correspondingly rare, with the Göbl classification identifying only a handful of die combinations across known specimens.
