Ephesos in this period was caught between Seleucid pressure and the expanding reach of Rome, having only recently passed through the hands of Antiochos III before the Peace of Apameia in 188 BC handed the city to Pergamon. The magistrate name Herakleitos appearing on this issue places it within a civic coinage that Ephesos maintained with surprising continuity through these political transfers — the city changed masters while its mint kept running.
