Heliokles II ruled a shrinking Baktrian kingdom already being pressed hard from the north by Saka nomadic incursions and from the east by expanding Indo-Greek rivals. His precise relationship to earlier Baktrian dynasts remains disputed — he may represent a separate western branch of Greek rule in the region rather than a direct continuation of the main line. The coinage itself is sparse enough that reconstructing his reign depends heavily on die studies rather than any ancient literary record.
