The Magnetes were a Thessalian tribal league whose coinage authority survived well into the Roman provincial period, issuing silver well after most neighboring regions had abandoned it in favor of bronze. This drachm falls squarely in the years of Caesar's dictatorship and the civil wars that followed his assassination — turbulent enough that a regional magistrate coinage from northern Thessaly would have been navigating serious monetary disruption. Hegesandros served as the issuing magistrate, his name appearing on the coin as the responsible authority under league governance.
