Struck in the final convulsive years of the Sasanian Empire, this drachm dates to the reign of Buran (Boran), daughter of Khosrow II, who ruled briefly in 630–631 AD — one of two women to hold the Sasanian throne. Her accession followed the catastrophic Persian defeat at the hands of the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius and the internal civil wars that gutted the empire's military and administrative core. Fewer than a decade after her death, Arab armies would extinguish the dynasty entirely.
Female-reign issues are among the scarcest in the Sasanian series by simple duration of rule.
