Ardashir I overthrew Artabanus IV at the Battle of Hormozdgan in 224 AD, ending four and a half centuries of Arsacid rule. His earliest silver issues, including this type, retain strong visual debt to Parthian minting conventions — a deliberate transitional posture from a king still consolidating legitimacy across former Parthian territories rather than imposing a fully formed Sasanian idiom. The kulah headdress variant specifically marks the earliest phase of his coinage before the introduction of the distinctive Sasanian korymbos.
