Smyrna's civic coinage of this period was issued under the magistrate system, with the issuing official's name — here Apollophanes — appearing as a guarantor of weight and purity rather than as a political statement. The city had been refounded by Antigonus and Lysimachus in the early third century BC, and by the second century was firmly within the Roman provincial sphere, though still exercising meaningful autonomous minting rights.
