Year 12 of Antoninus Pius's reign, which corresponds to 148–149 AD, saw the Alexandrian mint producing a notable volume of drachms with Serapis types — the god's cult at Alexandria carrying particular civic weight as protector of the city and guarantor of the Nile's fertility. The pairing was calculated, not incidental: Antoninus had no military campaigns to commemorate, and his administration leaned heavily on religious and civic imagery to project stability across the provinces.
The Köln corpus remains the standard reference for Alexandrian bronze of this period, though RPC IV has since refined attributions for several Serapis drachm varieties previously conflated under single catalog entries.
