Antiochos I assumed sole rule in 281 BC following the assassination of his father Seleukos I at the hands of Ptolemy Keraunos, inheriting an empire perpetually at war on multiple fronts. Seleukeia on the Tigris was the administrative and commercial heart of the eastern territories — not a peripheral mint but the dominant production center for coinage circulating through Babylonia and beyond.
