The Arab-Sasanian coinage issued under 'Ali ibn Abi Talib's caliphate represents one of the most politically turbulent minting environments in early Islamic history. 'Ali's reign was consumed almost immediately by the First Fitna — the civil war that produced the Battle of the Camel (656 CE) and culminated at Siffin (657 CE) against Mu'awiya. That this mint at Bishapur continued striking drachms on the inherited Sasanian monetary model throughout this period speaks to how thoroughly administrative and economic machinery outlasted the political chaos above it.
Year 25 of the Yazdigerd era places this coin squarely in the first year of 'Ali's caliphate. Bishapur, in Fars province, was a former Sasanian royal city and remained an active mint well into the Umayyad period.
