Bargylia was a small coastal city in Caria whose civic coinage is closely tied to its sanctuary of Artemis Kindyas — a cult so locally significant that the city fiercely defended its sacred status, at one point successfully petitioning Rome for asylia, the right of inviolability, around 193 BC. The drachm series attributed to this mint spans a remarkably long bracket, making precise dating of individual dies a persistent problem for specialists. SNG von Aulock 8074 remains the standard reference anchor for the type.
