Obverse description Bee depicted facing, seen from above in top-down view, with prominent globular thorax and segmented abdomen rendered in high relief at center of the flan. The wings are spread laterally and rendered with fine detailing, bordered by a row of pellets forming a decorative frame around the upper edge of the coin. The bee, sacred symbol of Ephesos and emblem of its famous sanctuary of Artemis, is rendered in a stylized yet naturalistic archaic Greek manner characteristic of the early Classical period.
