正面描述 Bearded head of Dionysos facing left, rendered in high relief in the archaic Greek tradition. The god is crowned with an elaborate ivy wreath, its berries and leaves rendered in fine detail across the top of the head. The facial features are boldly modeled, with a prominent brow, deep-set eye, broad nose, and full beard rendered in flowing strands. The style reflects the vigorous engraving characteristic of Thasian coinage of the early fourth century BC.

附加信息

Thasos derived extraordinary wealth from its gold and silver mines on the Thracian mainland — the same resources that later drew Philip II of Macedon to seize the region in 356 BC, effectively ending Thasian monetary independence for a generation. These drachms circulated during the last decades before that annexation, when the island was navigating the power vacuum left by Athenian defeat at Aegospotami in 405 BC.

The HGC 6, 344 attribution places this firmly within a well-documented but modestly studied series. Specimens frequently show flat areas on the reverse from dies cut slightly too deep for the flan size — a recurring production issue specific to this type.
