| Reverse description | Youthful male head of the river god Amenanos presented in right-facing profile, his hair bound with a tainia (fillet); the head is framed by two fish positioned symmetrically on either side, with a crayfish rendered in the lower right field, all emblematic of the local freshwater river of Catana. The reverse legend AMENANOΣ is inscribed in the field identifying the deity. The portraiture reflects the refined Sicilian engravers' art of the early fifth century BC. |
