Mylasa was one of the dominant cities of Caria, and its silver coinage of this period reflects the city's semi-independent status under the loosening grip of Seleucid and then Rhodian influence following the Peace of Apamea in 188 BC. The Rhodian peraia — the mainland territories administered by Rhodes after Rome handed them over — created an uneasy political environment in which Carian cities like Mylasa asserted local identity partly through coinage. This issue falls squarely in that transitional window.
