The Brettii — the Bruttians of Calabria's toe — issued this bronze during the final, desperate phase of their alliance with Hannibal. By 211 BC, Roman forces were systematically reclaiming southern Italy, and Bruttian coinage from this narrow window reflects an autonomous civic ambition that would be entirely extinguished by 203 BC, when the region was reabsorbed and its ruling class stripped of property and political standing as punishment for the Hannibalic defection. The Brettii never struck coins again.
