| Obverse description | A rooster stands in left profile within a beaded border, rendered in fine archaic relief. The bird is depicted with prominent upswept tail feathers, a well-defined comb and wattle, and sturdy legs resting upon a ground line composed of pellets. The feathering of the wing and body is articulated with careful engraved detail, reflecting the accomplished die-cutting style of early Sicilian coinage. The rooster served as the civic emblem of Himera, whose name was associated in antiquity with the Greek word for day, making the cock a natural and emblematic device for the city. |
