Phalanna was a minor Thessalian city whose coinage is extraordinarily rare — the BCD Thessaly collection, the most comprehensive assembly of regional issues ever formed, contained only a handful of attributed Phalanna pieces. The city sat in the Perrhaebian district of northern Thessaly and almost certainly struck coins intermittently rather than maintaining sustained mint activity, which accounts for the near-total absence of these drachms from the market.
BMC Greek #1 as a reference point suggests this type was among the first catalogued, yet remained poorly understood for decades given how few specimens existed for comparative study.
