Obverse description Youthful male head facing right, wearing the skin of a lion's scalp as a headdress, with the muzzle and forelegs visible atop the cranium — a type traditionally associated with Heracles. The facial features are rendered in a bold archaic-to-early Classical style, with strong brow, prominent nose, and full lips. The lion's mane cascades freely behind the neck, filling the left field. No legend is present on the obverse. The die work is characteristic of early Macedonian civic coinage struck under the newly founded colony of Philippi.
