| Obverse description | Rooster standing to left in high relief, rendered with considerable naturalistic detail; the comb, wattles, and layered plumage of the breast and tail feathers are carefully articulated. The bird's head is turned slightly upward, conveying alertness. The rooster served as a civic emblem of Himera, making it the dominant and emblematic device of the city's early coinage. The flan is irregular, characteristic of the archaic hammered technique. |
