正面描述 Facing head of Apollo, rendered in three-quarter view, wearing a laurel wreath with leaves extending to either side; the hair falls in loose, undulating locks around the face and neck. The deity's features are rendered in the fine Classical style characteristic of Macedonian mint engravers of the early fourth century BC, with softly modeled cheeks, large almond-shaped eyes, and a slightly parted mouth. The portrait occupies the full field of the flan with no surrounding legend.

背面描述 A racing torch set upright at center, depicted with a flaming head atop a long staff resting on a horizontal base, all contained within a shallow incuse square border. The ethnic legend ΑΜΦΙΠΟΛΙΤΕΩΝ is distributed around the four sides of the square, reading in segments along the top, right, bottom, and left margins respectively. The design is rendered in crisp relief against the recessed field, consistent with the incuse technique employed at Amphipolis during this period.

附加信息

Amphipolis had been an Athenian colony since 437 BC, but its fall to Brasidas in 424 BC — and Athens' repeated failure to retake it — became one of the defining humiliations of the Peloponnesian War. By the time this drachm was struck, the city had spent decades asserting its independence, and its coinage reflects that: autonomous issues from this narrow window in the late 360s are among the most briefly produced in the Macedonian region, predating Philip II's seizure of the city in 357 BC, after which independent Amphipolitan coinage ceased entirely.
