The Iltirta mint operated in what is now the Lleida region of northeastern Iberia, and this drachm falls squarely within the period of the Second Punic War — the twelve years during which both Carthaginian and Roman armies competed for the loyalty, resources, and military manpower of the Iberian tribes. The Ilergetes under Indibilis initially allied with Carthage, then switched to Rome, then revolted against Rome in 206 BC, a rebellion that ended with Indibilis killed in battle and his people subjected to a punishing indemnity.
These drachms closely imitate the coinage of Emporion, the Greek colonial mint nearby, suggesting deliberate monetary interoperability with established trade networks rather than independent numismatic ambition.
