Obverse description Helmeted head of Athena facing right, rendered in fine Hellenistic style. The goddess wears a Corinthian-type helmet adorned with a prominent wing and a tall, elaborately crested plume sweeping rearward. A round earring is visible at the ear, and wavy locks of hair escape beneath the helmet cheekpiece. The portrait is boldly modelled in high relief against a plain field, with no legend present.

Reverse description A large upright ear of barley — the civic emblem of Metapontion — occupies the centre of the field, rendered with finely detailed grains and a prominent stalk with a leaf branching to the left. To the right of the stalk, a Heraklean club is depicted diagonally, and the Greek monogram or control letters ΛΚ appear in the lower left field. The composition is bold and schematic, typical of the later Metapontine coinage series.
