Sinope's position as the dominant Greek emporium on the southern Black Sea coast gave its coinage wide commercial reach across Pontic trade networks, and the drachm series of this period circulated well beyond the city's immediate hinterland — found in hoards from Thrace to Anatolia. The city controlled critical tuna fishing routes and the export of Paphlagonian timber and iron, and its silver coinage functioned as a transactional currency across those industries.
The SNG von Aulock and Weber references place this piece within a well-documented sequence, though die linkage studies by later scholars suggest the emission was produced in relatively small batches rather than a single coordinated striking.
