Obverse description Sphinx seated to left in the Archaic style, with leonine body, outstretched forepaw, and detailed curling wing rendered in low relief. An amphora stands to the left in the field. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded or vine wreath border, a characteristic device of early Chian coinage. The flan is slightly convex and irregular, consistent with hammered production of the late 6th century BC.
