The Magnetes were a Thessalian people whose federal coinage of the mid-first century BC was struck during one of the most turbulent decades the Greek world had experienced in generations — the years immediately surrounding the Roman civil wars that culminated at Pharsalus in 48 BC. Thessaly became a direct theater of that conflict, with Caesar and Pompey both drawing heavily on the region for supplies and troop movements.
