Larissa's drachms of this period were struck under the authority of the Thessalian city's aristocratic ruling families, most prominently the Aleuadae, whose political maneuvering with Persian and Macedonian powers defined the city's fifth-century history. Thessaly remained largely neutral during the Peloponnesian War, and Larissa's mint operated without the disruptions that plagued Athenian and Corinthian production in the same decades.
BCD Thessaly I#1129 places this piece within a tightly catalogued die study from the collection of the late Belgian banker known only as "BCD," whose Thessalian holdings formed the most comprehensive private assemblage of the regional coinage ever auctioned — sold through Leu Numismatik in 2020.
