His right hand extends forward holding Nike, the goddess of victory, while his left hand rests upon a long sceptre. The field to the left bears a control mark. The surrounding Greek legend, divided between the left and right fields and running along the periphery, reads ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ ΘΕΟΠΑΤΟΡΟΣ ΕΥΕΡΓΕΤΟΥ, proclaiming Alexander I Balas as king, son of a divine father, and benefactor. The type follows the established Seleucid royal coinage convention derived from Macedonian prototypes. |
