Reverse description Facing gorgoneion depicted in high relief within a square incuse punch, the hallmark of early Greek hammered coinage. The apotropaic mask is rendered with wide staring eyes, a broad grimacing mouth with bared teeth, and a protruding tongue, surrounded by writhing snakes issuing from the hair and coiling about the head. The deeply recessed incuse square frames the design sharply, enhancing the confrontational intensity of the gorgon's visage in the archaic tradition.
