| Beschrijving keerzijde | A facing eagle-head or eagle displayed frontally in high relief at center, rendered with spread wings and prominent facial features, flanked by the partial retrograde civic legend ΚΡΟ identifying the issuing city of Kroton. To the left of the central device appears a tripod, a sacred symbol closely associated with Apollo and emblematic of the city of Kroton. The composition is bold and symmetrical, characteristic of the Bruttian Greek coinage of the fourth century BC. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Kroton's coinage in this period reflects the city's diminished but still-functioning status following its catastrophic defeat by the Lokrians and Bruttians around 389 BC — a military disaster that effectively ended Kroton's regional dominance and sent much of its population fleeing. The reduced weight standard of this drachm, lighter than the earlier Achaean staters for which Kroton was long known, speaks directly to those straitened circumstances.
The SNG ANS reference range 395-400 encompasses several die pairings with minor variations in the incuse treatment on the reverse.
