Obverse description Poseidon, the city's divine patron, depicted advancing to the right in a dynamic striding pose, nude save for a chlamys or drapery over his extended arm, wielding a trident held upright in his raised right hand. The figure is rendered in the robust, archaic-classical style characteristic of Poseidonian coinage of the mid-fifth century BC, with musculature and movement conveying divine authority. The abbreviated ethnic legend ΠOΣ appears in the field, identifying the issuing city. The flan is irregular and slightly rough, consistent with the hand-struck hammered technique of the period.
