Obverse description Radiate head facing right, rendered in high relief with pronounced sun-ray crown emanating boldly from the skull in the Hellenistic tradition; the facial features — strong jaw, prominent nose, and deeply set eye — have been associated by some scholars with a portrait of Pompey the Great. The style is vigorous yet somewhat provincial, characteristic of late Hellenistic Pontic and Colchian coinage. No legend or border appears on the obverse, the entire field being occupied by the large radiating effigy.
