Obverse description Facing left, the bearded head of Dionysos is rendered in fine archaic Greek style, crowned with an ivy wreath whose leaves and berries are depicted with naturalistic detail. The god's flowing beard, slightly parted lips, and deeply set features convey a sense of vigorous divinity characteristic of fifth-century Thasian coinage. The portrait fills the field with commanding presence, the engraving demonstrating skilled use of relief to articulate facial musculature. The flan is irregular, as typical of hammered ancient coinage of this period.
