The porcupine was Louis XII's personal device, adopted from the Orléans family badge and granted formal status by his order of chivalry — the animal was believed capable of shooting its quills as projectiles, a metaphor the king apparently found apt. The Dauphiné mint attribution here distinguishes this issue from the broader douzain production of the reign, which was itself a response to chronic small-change shortages that had plagued French commerce through the Italian Wars period.
Billon coinage of this type circulated hard and fast in the Rhône valley trade networks. The .359 fineness placed it just above token currency, acceptable for daily transactions but not worth hoarding.
