Obverse description Central field displays the crowned royal arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis — flanked on either side by a crescent, the dynastic badge of Henry II. The shield is surmounted by a fleur-de-lis-tipped crown. The surrounding legend, rendered in Gothic script, reads XPS VINCIT XPS REG XPS IMP REX M, invoking the Christogram formula ('Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands') in place of the king's name, a distinctive feature of this issue. A mint mark appears in the legend field.
