Reverse description A plain cross pattee divides the field into four quadrants, each canton bearing a crown above a fleur-de-lis, the whole set within an inner circle. The surrounding Latin legend bearing the date reads SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDICTVM 1594, the pious inscription meaning 'Blessed be the name of the Lord.' The design is characteristic of the Douzain coinage of the late Valois and early Bourbon periods, struck in the hammered technique.
