Henri IV's accession in 1589 was contested enough that his first coins had to establish legitimacy as much as circulate. The douzain — a workhorse denomination used for everyday transactions — was struck at multiple mints across a kingdom still divided by the Wars of Religion, and the mint letter is often the most historically loaded detail on the piece. Several provincial mints were operating under tenuous royal authority, and a handful briefly continued striking in the name of the League before submitting to Henri.
His conversion to Catholicism in 1593 resolved the political crisis but not the monetary one. Billon coinage of this reign is frequently found heavily worn, reflecting decades of uninterrupted circulation long after production ceased.
