Obverse description Central device consisting of a crowned royal shield of France semé of fleurs-de-lis, flanked on either side by the initial letter F, all surmounted by a large royal crown. The shield is rendered in the French heraldic tradition characteristic of late 16th-century feudal coinage. The surrounding circular legend is struck in Latin, separated by pellets, reading partially FRANCIS . P . DOMBAR . D . MONTIS . M, identifying Francis II as Prince of Dombes and Duke of Montpensier. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered billon coinage of this period, with a beaded inner border partially visible.

(Translation: Francis, prince of Dombes, duke of Montpensier.)
Reverse description A plain cross pattée at the centre of the field, with the four quarters occupied by crowned fleurs-de-lis or similar heraldic crown motifs, one in each canton. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads + DNS . ADIVT . ET . REDEM . MEVS . 1587, incorporating the mint date, and translates as 'The Lord is my help and my redeemer.' A beaded border frames the legend. The overall style is consistent with hammered feudal billon coinage of the Dombes Principality in the late 16th century.
