| Obverse description | A plain cross pattee occupies the center of the field, with the quadrants alternately charged with a crown (in positions 1 and 4) and a fleur-de-lis (in positions 2 and 3), following the traditional French royal quartering convention. The design is rendered in the bold, slightly irregular style characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the late sixteenth century. The peripheral circular legend in Latin is separated from the central device by a beaded inner circle. The overall die work reflects the provincial mint practice of the League period under Charles X. |
