Obverse description Crowned quartered shield of France and Dauphiné, displaying fleurs-de-lis in the France quarters and a dolphin in the Dauphiné quarters, set within a multilobed (polylobe) inner border. The royal crown surmounts the shield at the top of the field. The surrounding Latin legend reads FRANCISCVS D G FRANCOR REX, identifying François I as King of France by the grace of God. The die work is characteristic of the hammered billon coinage of the Dauphiné mints, with slightly irregular flan edges typical of the period.
