The circumferential Latin legend S · MARTINVS PATRON ° invokes Saint Martin as the patron of the city. The cross design is characteristic of small denomination coinage of the period, serving both an ecclesiastical and practical function in identifying the denomination. The flan edges are irregular, and the strike is somewhat weak in places as expected of hammered coinage of this era. |
