| Obverse description | Draped and bearded bust of Maximilien de Béthune (Sully) facing right, wearing a prominent ruff collar and a mantle decorated with ermine spots. The effigy is rendered in a robust, high-relief style characteristic of early seventeenth-century French feudal coinage. The legend commences at six o'clock and reads around the periphery within a smooth or beaded inner circle. The overall composition reflects the seigneurial portrait convention of the period. |
