Double Tournois - Maximilien I 1st type

Boisbelle-Henrichemont was a tiny sovereign principality in the Berry region of France, its independence a legal curiosity that survived largely because successive French kings found it politically inconvenient to annex outright. Maximilien I de Béthune — grandson of Henry IV's famous minister Sully — issued coinage here under rights inherited through the Sully line, producing types that closely mimicked royal French issues but carried the authority of this pocket-sized domain.

The 1st type designation in the CGKL classification distinguishes this from a later variant struck within the same reign, a detail that matters given how briefly this principality's independent coinage lasted before absorption into the French monetary system effectively rendered it moot.
