Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Louis XIII facing right, rendered in low relief in the baroque manner typical of French copper coinage of the period. The king is portrayed with long curling hair falling over his shoulder and a stylized laurel wreath crowning his head. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading the royal titles abbreviated as LOVIS XIII R D FRAN ET NAV (or variants thereof) with the letter H below denoting the La Rochelle mint. The design occupies a broad, slightly irregular field characteristic of hammered copper issues.
