Obverse description Laureate bust of Louis XIII facing left, the effigy rendered in a plain style characteristic of late hammered French copper coinage, with the laurel wreath encircling the head but without a bay sprig within the crown. The king's truncation is visible at the base of the portrait, and the bust is positioned centrally within the coin's field. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, separated from the effigy by an inner beaded border. The legend is abbreviated and varies by die variety, reading LOVIS XIII R DE FRAN ET NAV or similar contractions, denoting Louis XIII, King of France and Navarre.
