Dombes was a sovereign principality straddling the Saône floodplain north of Lyon, and its right to strike copper coinage was a persistent irritant to the French crown. Louis II de Bourbon-Montpensier had inherited the principality in 1560 and spent much of his tenure defending its minting privileges against royal encroachment — a fight his successors would eventually lose when Louis XIII annexed Dombes outright in 1626.
The "1st type" designation in the series reflects a die arrangement specific to the early years of his double tournois production, before revisions made under subsequent issues.
